Autumn Construction Services is providing quality control management and administration for Jay Dee Contractors on the storm sewer conveyance project located on the O’Hare International Airport airfield.

The project consists of the construction of an underground stormwater conveyance tunnel utilizing a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The tunnel is approximately 8,000 linear feet in length with an internal diameter of 144 inches and is being constructed approximately 50 feet below the existing grade while crossing beneath active airport taxiways and runways. The tunnel system is designed to convey stormwater flows to the South Detention Basin as part of the airport stormwater management system. 

Tunnel construction includes the installation of precast segmental concrete lining rings erected by the TBM during mining operations. The work also includes the construction of temporary launch and retrieval shafts required for TBM operations, as well as associated tunneling support activities. 

Additional scope includes construction of four permanent junction chambers, one manhole structure, Adit connections to the tunnel system, and an outfall structure at the South Detention Basin. The outfall structure will serve as the discharge point for stormwater conveyed through the tunnel system. Construction activities also include connections to existing storm sewer infrastructure and stormwater detention systems throughout the project alignment. 

Due to the project’s location within an active airfield environment, all work is being performed in close coordination with Airport Operations and requires phased construction activities, including temporary closures and restoration of affected taxiways, pavements, and surrounding airfield infrastructure. The project also includes restoration of areas impacted by construction operations, including portions of the South Detention Basin and airfield pavements affected during tunneling and shaft construction activities. 

Bulletin 4 Project Scope

Bulletin 4 scope of work includes construction of Junction Chamber 10 (JC-10) structural components and installation of a diversion structure connection to the Central Basin System B storm sewer infrastructure. 

JC-10 consists of construction of reinforced concrete structural elements including the base slab, walls, roof slab, and riser structure within the previously excavated shaft constructed during earlier phases of the project. 

The diversion structure work includes excavation activities near JC-10 and installation of an excavation retention system (ERS) utilizing sheet piling to support the excavation approximately 40 feet below existing grade. Work also includes installation of a 108-inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) connection between JC-10 and System B of the Central Basin stormwater system. 

Additional work includes associated excavation support, utility connection, dewatering, backfilling, and restoration activities required to complete the diversion structure and storm sewer connection work.
